Snow Day Outlook

Each winter, the Columbia STEM Alliance brings a little extra excitement to the season with our weekly Snow Day Outlook. Using forecasts, weather patterns, and a touch of local snow-day lore, we break down the chances of school closings on a fun, easy-to-follow scale from 0 (“No Chance”) to 4 (“Snow Day Likely”).

It’s not about avoiding school—research shows that the anticipation of a good snow, and the possibility of an unexpected day off, can actually boost well-being. A surprise snow day provides rest, family time, and a chance to reset, while the excitement leading up to it adds a spark of joy to the winter months.

Our blog gives families, teachers, and students a lighthearted yet thoughtful look at the week ahead—celebrating both the science of forecasting and the magic of hoping for snow.
